Questions and Answers

Question: When do I have to sign up?
Answer: A player must live by or enroll in the High School or in the area where he wants to play by MARCH 31, of the season (year) he is playing.

Question: I already live in the team's area for recruiting. How long can I wait to sign up?
Answer: July 15 is the date your name must be on file as a Legion player with National Headquarters.. Your Coach will submit the team roster long before this date because most of the games will be played by than. Make your team today, do not delay. Sign up using this site. You can always withdraw.

Question: How do I know if I have moved to the correct location to qualify for the team?
Answer: If enrolling in the High School, contact the High School Coach. He may be already affiliated with a Legion Team. If the High School Coach does not have a Legion team affiliation, consider starting your own team using the school district map and Map Quest tools available on this site

Question: How do I start a Legion Team?
Answer: Follow all the instructions on this site. Remember all your players must live in the defined area of the High School district or if you live in an urban-suburban area you may define your area according to one or more schools that total no more than 5000 Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors enrolled. Call your fellow coaches and agree on the approach.

Question: Some of my players do not own a computer. What do they do?
Answer: Use the computer at the Public Library. Be sure to tell players to write down their "ID" and "Password" so they can update their application when they revisit the Library. Girlfriends and fellow players can help them apply.

Question: Where do I find school district maps?
Answer: This question is frequently asked for many reasons. Because of these questions your school district is generally available on the School District website. Compare it to your Map Quest registration plot on this web site.

Question: What do I do if some players are playing for a Legion team from the schools I am recruiting from? What if I do not want to play for that coach?
Answer: Players have a one time option to continue with their old team or join your new team. Often school enrollment exceeds 5000 10, 11 12th graders making it necessary to have another Legion team. Form 76 or 77, available on this website, is used to get the player to where he wants to play. Tryout with the team nearest you and submit the Form 76 or 77 you print from this website to the Coach. He should sign your release to the new team or, if he does not sign, the Legion Post can also assist in this transfer. Your new team counts your school's enrollment in defining recruiting area. Remember the March 31st deadline, Question # 1 above. Your parent's move with the intent of a permanent change eliminates the enrollment count that would go with you.

Question: What is the cost?
Answer: Each State has a team registration fee. For example, Florida charges $ 125.00. Your team requires insurance to protect you during games. Insure your team during the sign up process. Only S.A. VAN DYK Insurance is accepted, $ 318.00. Your sponsoring Legion Post may donate to help pay for insurance and/or registration. See the Coach sign up page for information on paying these costs. Insurance is required before your first game (tryout).

Question: I'm definitely interested, will there be a Coaches Meeting?
Answer: The coaches signing up in your area will need to contact each other to set up an organizational meeting. The State Baseball Official often may attend if notified at the Legion State Headquarters. For example, Coach Mike Herron is the Texas Chairman. Even though he lives in Houston he is willing to attend if possible your meeting anywhere in Texas with adequate notice. The meeting is primarily a scheduling session because the application process for coaches, players and Legion Posts can be completed through this worldwide website.

Question: I'm ready, how do I call those coaches?
Answer: Print out all your forms, take your insurance certificate to the baseball park officials, e-mail your players for the tryout, and call the coaches from the registration telephone numbers for your area of your state. You can access those numbers from this website. A combined tryout, while not required, creates a more competitive tryout with all coaches evaluating and scouts may see your League for its competitiveness..

Question: Which players are my players?
Answer: The program automatically recruits players for you. They will automatically show up on your Form 1. All you need to do is e-mail the tryout date, time, and location, follow up with a telephone call, and assign uniform numbers to the players that you do not cut. Be sure to sign release forms for those players you do not select..

Question: We won the area tournament, I'm headed to State, what do I do?
Answer: Make a Compact Disk (CD) Rom of the pictures of your players, in uniform, that they have uploaded to the website. Bring the original seal birth certificates, the CD you made and a team picture to the State Tournament Director. If you need player pictures take the CD to any local drugstore that has film developing and print the pictures you need. Once reviewed, crack a bat! See you at the World Series.

Question: Why are we doing this website?
Answer: Do you prefer to play ball or tap a typewriter? This registration system takes you from team creation to the American Legion World Series. No PDF files or "stuck" data. Except for coaches registration you complete on this site, all the work is done for you. Just hit the print button. It is that simple.. Your Post Officers and Adjutant, your Umpires, your District and State Directors, the National Director and your team insurance representative can all get the information they need to help your team fulfill its summer Legion baseball season. The National Director can confirm your compliance with Legion recruiting rules by looking at the Map Quest plots on this website. You are in compliance, your team is in compliance, and your victory is in compliance. The only paper you need is a print button for tournament officials. And who knows, even the State Tournament Officials might join the movement to Digital American Legion Team Registration, Activity and Verification (DALTRAV©).

Question: Can I make a tax deductible contribution to promote American Legion Baseball including this website?
Answer: YES. Go to the "Blue Hats for Wood Bats" page on our web site; enter an amount, and click the Donation button. Thank you in advance for your support. We did this website for all present and future Legion teams worldwide.

Question: How do I learn more about those Legion Blue Hats that created this website for Legion Baseball players?
Answer: E-mail your questions to: commander@ALpost142FL.org. We will put them on this list if a name and title is provided.

Question: Why Wood Bats?
Answer: To Save Lives! The Department of Florida in convention unanimously voted for Major League rule wood bat baseball for the State of Florida 2005 season and recommended the Resolution to the National American Legion. For more information please see the home page of this site.
